Dr. Lyle is a prolific inventor and registered Patent Agent who holds more than 320 patents, with 283 more pending, and is recognized as one of the leading Black inventors in the world. Throughout her career, she has been a vocal advocate for expanding access to inventorship, increasing participation in STEM fields, and building more inclusive innovation pipelines. She shared on the Modern Figures podcast:

“You have to work really hard, but don’t work until you’re out of breath. Always chase your dreams and go after them… and as you run along, reach back and pull someone with you. Realize it’s a relay and you’re going to pass the baton.”

Dr. Lyle has spent her career putting this philosophy into practice by helping build the next generation of innovators and technology leaders. As the founder of NVIDIA’s Technical Patent Architect Practice, she has helped bridge legal, research, and engineering teams to accelerate inventorship, patent education, and innovation development across the organization. She currently leads initiatives focused on Diversity in Inventorship and Pathways to AI, creating opportunities for underrepresented communities to participate in the technologies shaping the future. For Dr. Lyle, innovation is more than breakthrough technologies. It’s about ensuring others have the opportunity to contribute, create, and succeed.

“Ruthie embodies what it means to be an IP Champion,” said Elaine Spector IPOEF Board Member and Partner at Harrity & Harrity. “She has dedicated her career not only to creating and protecting innovation, but also to ensuring that more people have the opportunity to participate in the innovation ecosystem. Her work demonstrates how intellectual property can empower inventors, strengthen industries, and create pathways for future generations of innovators.”

Before joining NVIDIA, Dr. Ruthie Lyle held leadership roles at IBM and USAA, where she helped establish strategic research programs focused on emerging technologies and innovation. She also made history as the first African American woman to earn a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from NYU Tandon School of Engineering, helping pave the way for future generations of scientists, engineers, and inventors.

This announcement kicks off Intellectual Property Awareness Month, a time dedicated to highlighting the vital role intellectual property plays in advancing innovation and improving lives. Throughout her career, Dr. Lyle has demonstrated how intellectual property can do more than protect inventions. It can create opportunities for inventors, expand access to innovation, and inspire future generations to turn ideas into impact. As emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence continue to reshape industries and society, intellectual property remains essential to fostering creativity, supporting entrepreneurship, and encouraging collaboration across disciplines.

Dr. Lyle’s commitment to expanding participation in innovation reflects the very purpose of the IP Champion Award and the broader mission of the IPO Education Foundation: ensuring that the next generation of innovators understands the value of intellectual property as a catalyst for progress and opportunity.

Dr. Ruthie Lyle will be honored at the annual IPO Education Foundation Awards Celebration on December 15, 2026, in Washington, D.C. The event brings together leaders from innovation, business, intellectual property, education, and public policy to celebrate individuals and organizations whose work demonstrates the power of intellectual property to drive progress and societal benefit. Additional awards presented during the evening include the Inventor of the Year and Inspiration Award.
