Youth basketball coach arrested after juveniles exited 7-11 without paying.

BARTOW, FL, UNITED STATES, August 17, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — The law firm of Rampersad Law has been formally retained to represent Mr. Malik Harvey in response to an unlawful arrest case with Polk County Sheriff’s Office stemming from a July 23 incident, reference 2026-CF-007356.

At approximately 4:00 AM on July 23, law enforcement officers awakened Mr. Harvey concerning an alleged misdemeanor involving a group of juveniles at a 7-Eleven on the opposite side of town that did not pay for snacks. Despite having no involvement in or prior knowledge of the incident, Mr. Harvey—a respected travel basketball coach—was arrested based on his mentorship role to some of the youths involved.

Hours after the incident at the convenience store, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office arrested Mr. Harvey on charges of child neglect. The arrest relies on the premise that Mr. Harvey was responsible because he had arranged an Uber ride for the juveniles six hours prior to the incident. The juveniles subsequently departed their residence and walked alone to 7-11.

“To hold a youth mentor criminally liable for the independent, immature actions of minors taken hours later from their own homes is not only a failure of basic police work—it is a severe miscarriage of justice,” said lead counsel Jeevan S. Rampersad. “Mr. Harvey maintains unwavering faith in the judicial system, his innocence and that his vindication will be delivered in a court of law.”
